Phthalates are chemicals used to make plastic softer - and they have commonly been used in the manufacturing of sex toys. The “jelly-like”, flexible plastic toys often contain this material, and they are often easier on your wallet. MSNBC.com has an interesting article on the potential health and environmental dangers of toys containing phthalates.
While there is no real hard evidence that these materials can be toxic, some studies have shown that phthalates may cause health and reproductive system problems. It’s enough of an issue that many of the cheaper sex toys containing phthalates come with the recommendation that you use condoms with them. Not only are phthalates potentially toxic, but toys that contain them are also porous, which means they can trap bacteria and dirt - and these toys cannot be disinfected.
How do you know if your sex toy contains phthalates? They often give off a rubbery chemical odor, especially right out of the package. Make sure to ask your sex toy shop whether the toy you are about to purchase contains phthalates. What’s the fun in using a sex toy if you need to slap a condom on it each time?
Sex toys that do not contain phthalates are made out of silicon rubber, glass, metal, hard plastic, or elastomer. These items are usually more expensive, but we say it’s worth it.
