Bonk!

April 15th, 2008 · No Comments

We can’t wait to pick up a copy of Mary Roach’s new book, Bonk: The Curious Coupling of Sex and Science. Her previous forays into the science of death and of the afterlife were both fascinating and amusing. Bonk is sure to be a must-read - especially for us Sex-Lifters! We’ll be sure to post a review once we’ve read it.

The Phthalate Issue in Sex Toys

April 11th, 2008 · No Comments

Phthalates are chemicals used to make plastic softer - and they have commonly been used in the manufacturing of sex toys. The “jelly-like”, flexible plastic toys often contain this material, and they are often easier on your wallet. MSNBC.com has an interesting article on the potential health and environmental dangers of toys containing phthalates.

While there is no real hard evidence that these materials can be toxic, some studies have shown that phthalates may cause health and reproductive system problems. It’s enough of an issue that many of the cheaper sex toys containing phthalates come with the recommendation that you use condoms with them. Not only are phthalates potentially toxic, but toys that contain them are also porous, which means they can trap bacteria and dirt - and these toys cannot be disinfected.

How do you know if your sex toy contains phthalates? They often give off a rubbery chemical odor, especially right out of the package. Make sure to ask your sex toy shop whether the toy you are about to purchase contains phthalates. What’s the fun in using a sex toy if you need to slap a condom on it each time?

Sex toys that do not contain phthalates are made out of silicon rubber, glass, metal, hard plastic, or elastomer. These items are usually more expensive, but we say it’s worth it.

Pee Like A Man

April 11th, 2008 · No Comments

OK, so this blog post isn’t actually about sex, but it does involve the female genital region so we figure it’s still relevant.

Women sometimes feel at a disadvantage due to the natural inability to pee while standing up - that is, without peeing all over themselves. There’s one product out there that allows women to do their thing JUST LIKE MEN - it’s called the Shenis…rhymes with…well, you know. It’s a 12-inch long plastic member with a funnel at one end that you cup in your genital area. Seems like it may be difficult to place just right so that there’s no dribbling. And wiping would still be an issue - who has that long to drip dry??

Some intrepid ladies from Jezebel.com got together awhile back with a bunch of booze on a Brooklyn rooftop and videotaped themselves putting the Shenis to the test. Hilarious, no?

Women, would you give the Shenis a shot? Or would you rather continue to squat outdoors when no commode is to be found?

Alternative Porn

April 8th, 2008 · No Comments

Not exactly anything new here, but we’d like to share a couple websites for an alternative pornography experience. Not everyone is turned on by the the blonde, implanted, shaved California specimens of mainstream porn, so there are a couple really popular options out there.

BurningAngel.com is a Brooklyn-based site started by Joanna Angel. Tattoos, piercings, and brightly colored hairdos abound here - as the site says, it’s “punk rock porn at its best.” These girls are raw and sexy, and the site has plenty of content in addition to the photos and videos (which are available by paid subscription - $79 for one year). Being a punk rock site, they also have music reviews, and they are even selling some of their own brand of sex toys. BurningAngel has even begun a foray into horror porn films - sounds like wicked fun!

SuicideGirls.com, on the other hand, is an Portland/LA-based site with a slightly less punk feel. Their subscription cost is $48 for a year’s membership. In addition to their photos and videos, they offer a podcast as well as videos to download to your iPod. And they’ve even had a Suicide Girls burlesque tour in the US and Europe. Plenty of pinup masturbation fodder can be found at SuicideGirls.com.

Sweet Gee-sus!

April 6th, 2008 · No Comments

The online world is abuzz with news of an injection designed to enhance a woman’s G-spot. The technical term for this is “G-Spot Amplification“, but it’s being referred to as the G-Shot. According to www.thegshot.com, the G-spot is injected with collagen, which “temporarily augments” the area. What we imagine this is intended to do is make the G-spot more prominent and easier to stimulate. However, the website doesn’t doing a good job illuminating exactly how or why the shot is supposed to heighten arousal - it mainly explains what collagen does in general. The FAQs are terse and vague, which doesn’t lend much credibility to this procedure. One page that discusses what the shot does is a poorly laid out, rambling paragraph filled with medical jargon. We must admit, we got lost a couple sentences in.

As an aside, the site obviously was not copy edited well: “The affect can last for up to 4 months, and does vary.”

We aren’t big fans of needles to begin with, and the thought of paying someone to stick one up into one’s vagina sounds up there on the Scale of Hideousness. Of note, the shot is not currently FDA approved. Whatever happened to good ol’ fingers and toys?

Aren’t collagen-injected lips creepy enough? What will they think of next - the P Shot for the male prostate?

Fleshlight - A Sex Toy for Men

April 3rd, 2008 · No Comments

We tend to talk a lot about sex toys for women, but there are plenty out there for men as well. The Fleshlight is probably one of the most talked-about masturbation devices created specifically for male self-pleasure. This product looks like a flashlight and when the cap is removed, you’ll see a fleshy opening made of “RealFeel Superskin” which is intended to closely replicate the sensation of actual penetration. Basically, it’s a masturbation sleeve for the penis.

This toy is super-customizable from the outer flashlight case to what sort of “opening” you prefer - vagina, anus, mouth, or “stealth” if you want your toy to look even more discreet. The interior texture of the sleeve is customizable and there are six options to choose from. There’s even an “ultra tight” option for those who like that super snug feeling. Different skin colors are also available. We think this toy is pretty genius. Watch a video about the Fleshlight on Sex-Lift.com now.
